The Changed Landscape

Funding research projects has become much more difficult this past year than it was in recent years.  For this reason, the SRED program is an important tool and will become more so.

The current hype about how we are pulling out of the economic downturn reminds this writer of the positive spins published in the months after the 1929 stock market collapse as the New York stock market staged a massive bear market rally, on its way to the cliff overlooking the abyss.  The current economic crisis is not some temporary aberration: it is a wake-up call to the fact that the economy is seriously out of tune.  It is a depression that will necessarily reallocate resources.

Canada is not insulated from what happens in the USA.  And with 3.5 trillion dollars of consumer debt, the USA economy is not likely to expand soon.  With the greenback’s value being eroded by the creation of more of them to finance the costs of American empire, recovery is not in the cards.  With the close-down of thousands of toxic Chinese factories and the turning of American industrial cities into modern ghost towns, we do not see any recent stock market activity as a sign of a recovery.  Nothing moves like a bear market rally.

No, we think this depression is entrenching for maybe 10 years, and those who are eligible for SRED assistance need to take advantage of it.
